Copenhagen, what a delight of a city you are! With its vibrant colours along the harbour front, its rich culture and history, and its home to some of the best food in the world. So if you’re here for the culinary scene, it’s unique attractions, or just there to soak up new cultures, there’s something for everyone. Here’s my ultimate guide to places to eat and things to do in Copenhagen:
Where to Eat in Copenhagen
Copenhagen’s culinary scene is world-renowned, and while restaurants like Geranium, Alchemist, and Jordnær may top the global rankings, their hefty price tags and near-impossible bookings can be a challenge. Luckily, the city is full of incredible dining options without the stress. I’ve got you covered!

Top Picks for a fine dining Memorable Meal:
- Høst: A Michelin-recommended gem that showcases modern Nordic cuisine with a rustic yet elegant touch. The multi-course menu is a journey through Denmark’s flavours, all at an affordable price compared to the city’s top-tier spots.
- Terra Restaurant: Run by a young Italian couple, this Green Michelin Star restaurant blends sustainable practices with incredible flavours. A favourite among locals and visitors alike (my friend who lives in Copenhagen highly recommended this place and it did not disappoint!)
- Esmee: Located in the heart of the city, this French-inspired restaurant combines sophistication with deliciousness. Perfect for a special occasion.
- Sushi Anaba: Traditional Japanese sushi with a Danish twist, crafted by a Danish chef trained in Japan. A must-visit for sushi lovers.

Casual Dining & Lunch Spots:
- Torvehallerne: An upscale food market offering everything from fresh produce to gourmet meals. Think Borough Market, but better!
- Reffen: The ultimate street food market by the water, complete with music, bars, and endless food choices. It’s vibrant, fun, and absolutely delicious.
- Warpigs: The Meatpacking District is home to this BBQ haven. Expect smoky, flavourful dishes that will leave you craving more – it was mouthwatering!
Hija De Sanchez: Featured on Netflix, this spot serves authentic Mexican tacos that are out of this world.
Juno the Bakery: A local favourite for fresh-baked breads and pastries. Don’t miss it!
POPL Burger: Near the harbour, this burger joint is perfect for a casual bite before enjoying drinks by the water. Best burger ever, and the sides, oh my!
Things to Do in Copenhagen
When you’re not indulging in Copenhagen’s incredible food, there’s plenty to see and do.

Must-See Attractions:
- Nyhavn: Copenhagen’s iconic harbour lined with colourful houses, bustling cafes, and picturesque views. A great starting point for any adventure.
- Boat Tour: Departing from Nyhavn, these tours offer a relaxing way to explore the canals while learning about the city’s history. It was fascinating, well worth it!
- Tivoli Gardens: One of the world’s oldest amusement parks, Tivoli is a magical experience with rides, gardens, and live entertainment. It’s especially enchanting in the evening when the lights come on. Particularly now at Christmas, it’s similar to a Winter Wonderland or Christmas markets.
- Christiania: A unique, self-governed commune with its own charm. Wander around, visit the lake, and soak in the alternative vibe. Be prepared for the smell of Cannabis.
- Church of Our Saviour: Climb the winding, open-air staircase for panoramic views of Copenhagen. It’s an unforgettable (if slightly nerve-wracking) experience.
- Botanical Gardens: Escape the hustle and bustle with a peaceful stroll through these lush gardens.
- National History Museum: Dive into Denmark’s rich history, from Vikings to modern-day culture. I’m obsessed with Vikings so I loved it!

Day Trip to Malmö, Sweden:
A 25-minute train ride brings you to Malmö, Sweden – a charming city perfect for a day trip. Rent a bike to explore its parks and neighbourhoods, or visit the quirky Disgusting Food Museum for a laugh. Discover many unique worldly delicacies, taste a selection of bugs and sample the world’s hottest man made chillies – if you dare!

Explore Copenhagen Like a Local
- Rent a Bike: Copenhagen is one of the world’s most bike-friendly cities (second behind Amsterdam but they’re desperate for top spot!) Pedal through its streets like a local for a fun and eco-friendly way to explore.
- Pack Smart: Danish weather can be unpredictable, so bring layers to stay comfortable, depending on the time of year you go. One day we were just in a jumper and the next we were dashing for coffee to warm up our frozen hands!

Copenhagen is a city that truly has it all – world-class food, rich culture, and unforgettable experiences. Whether you’re here for a weekend or a week, this guide will help you make the most of your time.
Happy exploring!
